Be prepared on Oscar night with Vanity Fair Hollywood for iPad (Appolicious)

0

APPOLICIOUS ADVISOR RATING:

4 of 5 bars PRICE: FreeTASTY: You can cast your vote for Oscar® winners in 24 categories.BUMMER: The app has a ton of ads.COOL: You can see how your friends voted.

Vanity Fair Hollywood: Oscars® Edition (free) is the only app you'll need to keep up with all of the buzz about the most exciting night for movies. With it, you can review the nominated movies and actors, watch trailers, and vote for who you think will win. With Facebook integration, you can see how your friends have voted, and share your choices. Even though there are more L'Oréal ads than you'll ever want to see, it's still worth having around on the big night.

The main idea of this app is to be able to vote for who you think will win the Oscar® in each category. There are 24 categories to make your choices in, each with multiple nominees. You can read a brief summary about the nominees. You can even watch a trailer of each movie. The app will also show you what percentage of votes a specific nominee has received. After you've logged into Facebook, you can also see how your friends have voted.

Download the free Appolicious iPad app

There are some other interesting sections of the app. The "Leaders" section will show you who, among your friends, are in the lead for the most correct predictions of the winners. In "Buzz," you can view live tweets about Hollywood news from Vanity Fair. There is also a "Features" section that contains a few Oscar® party videos and photos from previous years. It's nicely presented, however, this section might be the most annoying one, with so many ads tossed in. There are 10 slides, five of which are ads for L'Oréal.

This app is definitely not the prettiest, most intuitive or the most stable. Yet, it's still worth having and using during Oscar® night.

Android apps to prepare you for The Oscars’ red carpet (Appolicious)

0
Live From the Red Carpet: Don’t miss one fashion moment from this year’s Oscar ceremony with this app.BlackSwan Live Wallpaper: Until the DVD is released, constantly relive the momentous kiss everyone is talking about.Oscar Quotes: Amuse friends at an Oscar party with memorable speeches past. The Oscars Trivia Challenge: Liven up the party by challenging other movie lovers to Oscar-style trivia.Oscar 2011: If you missed the majority of the best picture nominees, get this app to get the goods.

Award shows can be great television. The beautiful gowns and exquisite jewels make for a fashionable red carpet entrance, and hours of pre-event TV programming to rate your favorite stars' fashion sense (or the fashion sense of their celebrity stylist/sponsor). The surprised speeches and camera pans to the "oh-no-I-didn’t-win" faces of losers make for uncanny moments of humor for us pajama-clad viewers across America. This year, whether you are watching alone or with a group of star-loving friends, check out these Android apps to up the ante on your Oscar night viewing fun.

Step out of your limo, err... I mean open this Android app, and Ryan Seacrest and Giuliani Rancic great you on the red carpet. The free Live From the Red Carpet app from E! Entertainment puts you up close and personal with the award nominees as they strut their stuff on the red carpet before Hollywood’s golden ceremony. Use the app now to view coverage from the precursor award shows and video, photos and stories about the upcoming 2011 Oscars. I love the “GlamCam 360” that gives you a full view of some of the best-dressed Oscar nominees. With this app on your Android, you won’t miss any fashionable moments from this year’s award shows.

Unfortunately, The Oscars does not have a “Best Kiss” award like some of the other award shows (here’s looking at you, MTV). If they did, my money would be on Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis taking home the golden statue. At least I hope to see mom-to-be Natalie take home the best actress award this year at The Oscars. Until the Black Swan movie DVD is released, you can relive that dramatic kissing scene with the BlackSwan Live Wallpaper app ($1.00).

This clever little free app, Oscar Quotes, lets you scroll through some of the best 45-second Oscar acceptance speeches from award shoes past. Open up the app, pop the cork and browse great and silly speeches from Angelina Jolie, Ben Affleck, Bob Dylan and more! Recite them out loud to your friends for additional Oscar fun.

If you are having an Academy Award viewing party with friends or family, you should definitely download The Oscars Trivia Challenge app ($2.99). Test your guest’s knowledge of more than 80 years worth of best picture nominees and more. The trivia challenge is divided up into a category menu so you can choose from best actor, best actress, best picture categories and many more. The quicker you answer the multiple choice questions, the more points you earn.

Have you been slacking on the movie going this past year? Never fear, check out the free Oscar 2011 app for a countdown to the red carpet and links to information on all the best picture nominees. This is a really simple app to get you up-to-date quickly before your Oscar party. Don’t look like a fool in front of your friends; download the free Oscar 2011 app!

Get ready for the Oscars with these star-studded iPhone apps (Appolicious)

0

Just a few days remain until the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, the most glamorous night in Hollywood. And there is a long list of movies you need to watch in preparation – The King’s Speech, Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, True Grit and Toy Story 3 to name just a few.

But don’t forget to iPhone it up. For those of you who love to analyze every angle of every film (or for those who need a bit of a cheat sheet) there are a bunch of handy iPhone apps to feed the frenzy. So grab a bowl of popcorn and get ready, you never know what bit of Oscar history you will be taking-in on February 27.

A good place to start is The Academy’s own The Oscars app (free). It is broken down into two main categories: The Academy and The Oscars. In The Academy section you will find related news, photos and video. It also has a fabulous database of past winners which can be searched by category or decade. Do you want to know who won for best actor in a leading role in 1952? You can find it in the database: Gary Cooper for his role in High Noon.

If you are the opinionated type, then you must be dying to put in your two cents with a vote. The Vanity Fair Hollywood: Oscars Edition app (free) allows users to vote in 27 categories. It probably includes the ones you barely know anything about, like “Achievement in Makeup,” too. Download this app, and you’ll have a shot at winning a free trip for two to Los Angeles.

The Awards Guide: The Oscars app (free) also allows you to vote for your favorite film, or actors and actresses. And this app shows real-time voting results, so you can know where your top picks stand. The app also includes a nice feature wherein users can see not only past Oscar winners, but also how many times an individual was nominated and for what. This is a great feature, given that some of the best films ever made were overlooked by Academy voters.

For the very best in movie history, check out the Oscars History app ($1.99). It includes a great trivia game with questions like “Who was the youngest winner of an acting award? (from Paper Moon, 1973).” It was Tatum O’Neal at 10-years old.

As lovely as they are, we all know that the Oscars aren’t just about the movies. Built around it is an entire industry of parties, red carpet events, stylists and lots of very expensive fashion. Day-after analysis often includes as much talk about sartorial decisions as it does about who went home with the little bronze statues. That is why the Live From the Red Carpet app (free) is an absolute must-have. From the one-shoulder dresses to the Christian Louboutins, it’s all there.

And just for good laughs, we are going to toss in Movie Awards Crossword ($1.99). With this app, you can play one of your favorite games, sharpen the mind and brush up on movie data and trivia.

Movie junkies might like AFI iPhone app (Appolicious)

0

APPOLICIOUS ADVISOR RATING:

4 of 5 bars PRICE: FreeTASTY: Good resource for movie junkies.BUMMER: Heavy on self-promotion.COOL: Use top 100 movies list as a reference.

There is the casual movie fan who enjoys catching a flick on the big screen every now and again. Then there are the hardcore fans who can name every Oscar winner ever, and who crave knowing everything about the filming and production of their favorite movies.

The American Film Institute iPhone app (free) is for the latter category of fan.

Included in the app are multiple video clips of interviews with some of Hollywood's biggest names. For example, there are interviews with Jack Lemmon, who was featured in Some Like It Hot, The Apartment and Grumpy Old Men, and Harrison Ford of Blade Runner, Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The app also allows users to connect with AFI's Twitter feed and its Facebook page. And, if you're so inclined, you can become an AFI member via the app.

One of the coolest features on the app is AFI's list of the 100 best films ever made. Scrolling through it is like scrolling through the history of Hollywood. Citizen Kane, The Godfather and Casablanca top the list, in case you were curious. And Yankee Doodle Dandy, Toy Story and Ben Hur round out the list at 98, 99 and 100 respectively.
