"Become Yourself": Tyler Perry's Starry "For Colored Girls" Film Arrives Nov. 5 (Playbill)

Tyler Perry's film adaptation of Ntozake Shange's Tony Award-nominated play for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf arrives in theatres Nov. 5.

Perry directs the film, called "For Colored Girls," based on Shange's 1974 play that interweaves the stories of African American women through a series of poems, both individual and choral, which trace their battles through life, love, violence and self-discovery.

The cast boasts Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Loretta Devine, Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise and Macy Gray.

For colored girls premiered at the Public Theater and moved to Broadway in 1976 with playwright Shange featured as one of seven women who "reveal themselves, their lives, loves, hardships, and ultimately their discovery of strength and love."

The production was nominated for a 1977 Best Play Tony Award, and actress Trazana Beverley won a Tony in the category of Best Actress in a Featured Role (Play). The original Broadway company also featured Laurie Carlos, Risë Collins, Aku Kadogo, Janet League, Paula Moss and Ntozake Shange.
