BAMAKO (AFP) – reggae star Tiken Jah Fakoly Sunday joined calls for Laurent Gbagbo accept defeat in the presidential elections last month and step down.
"There must be no democracy," said the musician openly during a press conference in Mali's capital, where he lived since the civil war erupted in Côte d'Ivoire in 2002.
"He (Gbagbo) must find a sorting. We live in a village Planetarium and when the whole world is talking, you must listen, "he said.
"There were too many deaths in Côte d'Ivoire, we do not want any further bloodshed," he said.
"Today is only supporter of Gbagbo television (public) that he controls. When he does not control the TV, the day is over. "
The star of reggae has a long history of social and political activism, and hit the headlines in 2007 when it was declared "persona non grata" from Senegal after criticising the President Abdoulaye Wade.
Gbagbo has become stuck in a dangerous face-off with long-time enemy Alassane Ouattara after both claimed victory in last month's presidential election, declared himself President and named Governments rivals.
Ouattara was recognized by the United Nations and the international community.
