CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Colombian singer Shakira was honored Saturday by Harvard University for his artistic and humanitarian work. Later, he said that some U.s. States have proposed anti-immigrant legislation goes against the efforts of his Foundation to provide education to the poor of the world.
The Grammy Award winning singer, however, said Latin immigrants in the United States faced with various anti-immigrant bills will have "justice" as public awareness grows on their situation.
"Justice will come."I'm sure, Shakira, The Associated Press said after the ceremony. "Everywhere ... There is a child, which could be the son and the daughter of an immigrant Latino, who cannot attend a school in United States of America, the child should be a concern for all of us and our responsibility."
Shakira has made the comments in an interview, when asked about the measures proposed in Arizona and elsewhere targeting illegal immigrants. A Bill in Arizona, for example, it would bar illegal immigrants from attending public school, living in public housing or guide. Another Bill seeks to deny citizenship to children born in the United States, if the parents are immigrants.
"I think we should not think less of the Latino Community ever because it is a productive force in this country," Shakira said AP.
The singer, born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, was awarded the "2011 artist of the year" by the foundation of Harvard University's Center for science and arts initiatives to intercultural dialogue.
Director of the Fondazione s. Allen counter said, which has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, Shakira was honored for his "illustrious history of creativity" as well as for his charitable contributions.
Previous award winners include Harvard Sharon Stone, Will Smith, Jackie Chan and Herbie Hancock.
Shakira has said that she was humiliated by the award and performance of students at the ceremony. "As I entered the premises of today, I had to call my mom and say:" Hey Mama. Guess what? I got into Harvard, "said that took a history class at UCLA in 2008, Shakira.
After accepting the prize, has challenged the students of Harvard to do more to improve education in developing countries. "Not everyone can study at Harvard University," he said. "But everyone, wherever they live, whatever their background, deserves the opportunity to make the most of its potential" through education.
Said that applied to poor children in Bangladesh or immigrants in the United States. "And as a child in the developing world, it is my duty to use this voice in every possible way to promote the message about the power of education to change lives," he said.
Shakira has founded the Foundation Barefoot at the age of 18 to provide education and nutrition to children in impoverished areas of Colombia. She is also a Goodwill Ambassador for Unicef.
Howard Buffett, 56, son of billionaire investor Warren Buffett and a member of the Board of the Barefoot Foundation, said that he and Shakira have intention to work on education projects in parts of the world devastated by wars and natural disasters.
"I think she brings credibility, especially because of his background," said Buffett. "She is rather concentrated on education."
