LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter)-"American Idol" Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta doesn't watch much TV, but he wasn't about to miss the season premiere of 10 memorable! In fact, he and the rest of the Archuletas made night and sat together family as the world was introduced to new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. "It feels like the first season of American Idol starts again," he says. "That same thrill is."
Ever the optimist, half glass full chat with Archie dimpled amabile is nothing if not an uplifting experience and this time was no different. Read on to hear more of his thoughts on season 10.
THR: when was the last time that you and your family sat down to watch "Idol" collection?
Archuleta: We never do it, but the interesting thing with this season is that my family was excited to see, too. When I was in the show, have been overwhelmed by the whole experience of "American Idol", but they are still fans. It's almost like the new beginning brought the excitement of new, fresh back.
THR: what do you think of Jennifer Lopez?
Archuleta: it was really fun to watch. She is a person I have grown up with watching the film "Pink" and my mom enjoyed listening to his music. I loved only seeing a Latin represents.
THR: A lot of people have been commenting that she was too easy for competitors, what do you think?
Archuleta:, understand the nerves that people feel, so that you cannot help but feel empathy for them. Are the performers, and I think I have, of course, that side feeding them. As we saw with Paula, she was always beautiful, but had a little harder as you went along, making, get over feeling bad for them and start giving them real criticism. I think you did a really great job for the first time. It is not easy to tell people to their face and be honest if you crush their dreams.
THR: what do you think of Steven Tyler?
Archuleta: a lot of people don't realize that a character who he is. Did really entertaining and fun to watch. I thought it was going to be more reserved and quiet. I thought it was going to be more self-conscious that was, and I'm glad that he wasn't. I think he is used to being in front of people and having to deal with attention. It was really refreshing that judges have been able to be yourself.
THR: do you feel like this is more true Randy Jackson?
Archuleta: I think he feels the responsibility of being the only judge on the show original and drive the other two judges, because I am new to this. I think there's a lot that goes into being a judge--be there physically and emotionally, too. The other two judges are always blocking that and Randy leads them. He is in charge now, because he is the one who have been there longer and understands how things work. I think he is harder, because Simon there than brutally honest and do the dirty work, but Randy was honest enough on things.
THR: If you can relive the hearing would be judged by Jennifer Lopez or Steven Tyler?
Archuleta: don't know. I think it was pretty cool for Paula and Simon there. It was really awesome to have Steven and Jennifer Lopez, too, however, and interesting to see what kind of advice and what they thought would have given after each performance.
THR: Simon is lost?
Archuleta: it is difficult to say that he is lost, because I know that he is going to be on another show. I'm going to get my share of Simon, but I feel as though he needed to be gone in order to obtain this new, fresh enthusiasm. To hear you're watching something for the first time. They kept Simon vi, you might feel like he was getting old.
THR: there were a lot of talented 16-and 17-year-olds during the hearings so far
Archuleta: it's great that they have entered a lot of younger people, because in previous seasons, have discouraged the younger guys from auditioning because they don't feel as if they were ready. It's cool that people can start after their dreams at a young age. You don't have to wait until you are 30 things happen, it may be young, motivated and be willing to work hard, and I think it is great that they show that. Especially now, with "Joy" has brought a lot of kids to love the music and performing at a young age. All ages watched "American Idol", but I think it was nice to be able to show you guys, "Hey, you can be here, too."
THR: do you feel like "Idol" need to make changes?
Archuleta: for me, were very welcome. I liked the way that they did, and I think it was necessary to change it at least a little. Because although they kept the old format and the judges themselves, sometimes things can get old if you keep something for too long. I think it was able to grab people's attention again.
THR: what are these auditioners going through now their moment of TV was seen by millions of people. What was your experience?
Archuleta: suddenly, these people started texting me out of nowhere. People somehow had my number and calls and SMS. It really bugged me.
THR: why?
Archuleta: Because I didn't want people to know. I didn't want to disappoint them, if I didn't go further. I've always wanted to keep things to me, so it was strange that only one of my biggest secrets--auditioning for "American Idol"--now it was out there, I didn't know what was going to happen, but I was really excited that just was I was wondering what the future will be like, what's going to happen, and how difficult it is going to be? Going to be able to manage it all, what's going to happen next? I think part of that effort is good because it keeps you focused.
