Darren Aronofsky bows out of "Wolverine" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter)-Darren Aronofsky is bowing out of directing the sequel to 20th Century Fox's "Wolverine," saying the project would keep him out of the country for too long.

Fox and Hugh Jackman-which is set to return in the title role, said they remain fully committed to making "Wolverine" and move aggressively to find a new Director.

Fox had not yet greenlit the sequel. A significant part of the movie will be filmed abroad (there had been plans to shoot in Japan).

"I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of The Wolverine would keep out of the country for nearly a year," Aronofsky said in a joint statement with Fox.

"I wasn't comfortable being away from my family for that period of time. I'm sad that I won't be able to see the project through, as it is a great script and I was very eager to work with my friend, Hugh Jackman, once again, he continued.

Said Fox: "while of course we are disappointed that Darren can't do ' Wolverine ', even we understand and respect his reasons. Having done both ' The Wrestler ' and ' Black Swan ' with Darren, we know that he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox remain fully committed to make Wolverine. We regroup and move forward aggressively. "

Aronofsky's protozoa production company has the first look deal with Fox.

Christopher McQuarrie's writing "Wolverine". The Film does not yet have a release date.
