LOS ANGELES (AFP)-Us actress Sandra Bullock has donated 1 million dollars to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami crisis in Japan, the latest celebrity to pledge aid, the American Red Cross said Thursday.
The contribution, as described by Bullock and his family, came after the United States aid agency announced that it was given 10 million dollars to the Japanese Red Cross for help after the earthquake last Friday.
"The American Red Cross is extremely grateful for this generous support from Sandra Bullock and his family," it said in a statement.
Bullock has a son, a boy adopted shortly after the announcement that she was divorcing her husband TV-personality five years amid reports that he was unfaithful.
"This contribution is of vital importance as works of the Red Cross to provide critical assistance and essential relief items at this time of urgent need to so many people in Japan," he added.
Other celebrities who have stepped up to include Lady Gaga, who raised $ 250,000 in 48 hours with the sale of red and white wristbands bearing the message "we pray for Japan" of $ 5 a piece through his website.
Rock band Linkin Park also sells t-shirts, designed by band member Mike Shinoda, whose father is Japanese-American, to raise funds for victims of Japan.
In January 2010, Bullock donated 1 million dollars to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
On Tuesday this week the American Red Cross has announced a contribution of 10 million dollars to Japan, adding that a disaster management expert had arrived in the country for a mission lasting a week.
