London (AFP)-the transparent dress who helped Kate Middleton to capture the attention of her husband to be Prince William sold Thursday for £ 78,000, smashing the expected price for the garment risqué.
The number of black transparent that Kate wore during a charity fashion show at Saint Andrews University in Scotland in 2002, went under the hammer at a packed room of sales in Central London.
The price of 125,000 dollars or euros, 89,000, which included a buyer's premium of £ 13,000, far exceeded the initial estimate of £ 10,000 by Kerry Taylor auctions.
A man on the back of the room sales who declined to give his name said it has acquired on behalf of an individual which identify only as "Nick from Jersey."
While speculation swirls about dress that Kate will wear for the Royal Wedding at Westminster Abbey on 29 April, the most famous garment, which she has worn so far has spent years rolled into a closet full of junk.
Middleton, 20 years, then strode down the catwalk wearing knitted or crocheted panty-black dress and underwear during the show student nine years ago, when she and William were students at the University.
William, second in line to the throne, had paid £ 200 for a front row seat and shortly after their friendship blossomed into romance. Some reports suggest that he first tried to kiss her at a party later that evening.
The strapless dress was designed by Charlotte Todd, who was a fashion and textile design student in 2000 at the University of West of England when he produced for a project entitled "The Art of Seduction".
The dress costs £ 30 for putting together and was intended as a skirt.
Two years later, Todd was invited to present a garment for fashion show of the annual Saint Andrews. The piece has been selected for Middleton, who wore a dress.
"I'm totally speechless and feel very emotional," said Todd 31 years after the sale. "I really don't think it would make that amount."
"I'm going to put some money towards a deposit for a House, but maybe I can use some change in my career," he added.
Kerry Taylor, the auctioneer, said the sale did fantastically well and went above expectations in everything. I am glad that the habit was a princely sum. "
Selling Thursday also included two outfits worn by the deceased mother of William, Diana, Princess of Wales.
