Garden gnomes topple "Tangled" at UK box office (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) – A gnomic reimagining of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" topped the British box office on its debut weekend, according to Screen International on Tuesday.

"Gnomeo and Juliet," featuring the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as the star-crossed gnomes of Verona Drive, took 2.94 million pounds ($4.7 million) and kept Oscar-nominated "The King's Speech" down in second place for another week.

Last week's chart-topper "Tangled" was down in third place with the fairy story of Rapunzel and her long, golden hair.

Another Oscar contender, the remake of "True Grit" with Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld, came in at four, just piping venerable cartoon favorite "Yogi Bear" on his debut, with Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake voicing the two stars of Jellystone Park.

Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler were new at six with romantic comedy "Just Go With It" while ballet-themed Oscar hopeful "Black Swan" was down three places at seven.

Boxing biopic "The Fighter" was down five at eight, just above Orwellian sci-fi movie "Never Let Me Go" which came in at nine.

"James Cameron Presents Sanctum" slipped to 10 from five.
